Buffalo Headwaters Challenge

In the middle of nowhere.. in the middle of winter.. still the most fun you'll have all year.

An Ozark Off Road Cyclist Production

presented by GPP Cycling™ Shops of NWA

  • Dates: January 26th - 28th, 2018
  • Location: Red Star, AR
  • Join us January 26th thru the 28th for the 13th Annual Buffalo Headwaters Challenge! It's not a race... it's a experience!
  • This is the OORC's Annual Membership Ride and entree is FREE to current OORC members. That's right... Food, beverages, tent camping, the Challenge Ride... free of charge*. A "Friends of" membership is available here: http://ozarkoffroadcyclists.org/temporary-weekend-membership for those not looking to carry more than one IMBA membership, and onsite membership sign-up will be available. To sign-up as a member visit: https://www.imba.com/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=267
  • We'll kick things off Friday January 26th with an OORC Birthday Bonfire and dinner highlighting 21 years of volunteer trail advocacy! Come say hello to old friends... and meet some new ones. We'll even throw in some acoustic campfire tunes!
  • Then... we'll crank things up (and Breakfast) Saturday Morning with the 13th Annual Buffalo Headwaters Challenge Ride leaving from Red Star, Arkansas at 10am… ish! Featuring the Upper Buffalo Mountain Bike Trail System (an IMBA EPIC), riders choose between multiple routes including the 40ish mile Challenge, the 26 or so mile Half-Challenge and the 17'er-so mile(new do to high requests (see we listen)) ! It’s an "experience" not to miss.
  • Next, stick around and hangout for an amazing recovery meal featuring the Legendary Grill Cheese cooked up hot by our friends at the Buffalo Outdoor Center and local craft beverages! We're not done...then we'll crank up the music with live bands well into the evening featuring local artist and Campfire Food.
  • But wait... there's more. We're putting something extra special together for Sunday... after grubbing down on a breakfast of pancakes, biscuits and CHOCOLATE gravy (why not!) at 9am, you'll want to stick around for a unique experience never offered before...
  • The #OORC is turning the dial to rowdy!
    • In tandem with the 13th Annual Buffalo Headwaters Challenge ride on January 27th, we are introducing our first "Hoot 'N Holler" Enduro Inspired MTB Experience on Sunday January 28th! An enduro inspired ride with shuttle service and a route that features some of the best downhill experiences the Upper Buffalo has to offer! For more specific details check out the event page for Sunday here:https://www.facebook.com/events/1317086725010485/
  • ALL Riders will need to go through a quick registration process even if your membership is up to date. Riders need to stick their head into the school and verify their membership, fill out an annual liability waiver, and grab a wristband for the weekend (+21 will be identified by a specific color).
  • Onsite Registration schedule is:
    Friday 1/26 from 5pm to 7pm
    Saturday 1/27 from 7am-9am
Saturday 1/27 from 7pm-9pm (for those traveling in late to just ride the Hoot 'N Holler
Sunday 1/28 from 7am-9am for the Hoot N' Holler
  • You DO NOT need to register more than once on site. Once you've checked in at registration, you are good for the entire weekend.
  • Couple notes:
-Cell reception is spotty at best. Not that you'll have much time to be trolling the social webs with all the fun you'll be having anyway.
-Due to lack of reception, cash or check only on event grounds. We will not have the availability to process credit cards so if you don't signup as a member before heading out, you'll want to bring an alternate form of payment.
  • Plenty of tent camping available. No generators please... people will sleep. If your travleing via RV we will have specific parking areas available that are flat...ish, but there are no hookups available on the main grounds. There are areas within kinda close proximety that offer hookups and cabin rentals.
  • Please leave the pups at home. We love them trail dogs too, but for liability we ask that they sit this one out.
  • Although a couple aid stations are available on the routes, we ask that riders approach the Challenge as an unsupported adventure ride and carry with them the tubes, tools, hydration and nutrition needed to get back. The courses will be marked, but this is Mountain Biking in the Ozark Mountain back country.

* Mountain Bike Workshops may carry additional fees.
